What kind of band is this?
|
Big Hungry Joe is a new danish band playing american folk music in the
style named Old-time music. This is not the polished folk music that were
played in coffee shops and campuses in the 60's and 70's. On the contrary
it is folk music which is solidly entangled in the roots of the centuries
old folk music tradition of the Appalachians. It is lively instrumental
tunes, which can tempt the listener to dance 'till dawn, go rabbit hunting
and drink moonshine whiskey. It is songs about railroads, women, gambling,
murder, moonshine and various barnyard animals.

|
Big Hungry Joe presents this type of music as it was intended. It is not
wrapped up in modern experiments or new interpretations. Nor is it treated
like a curiosity or some ancient kitsch from bygone days. It is rather
presented with respect for tradition and with an energy worthy of the year
2008.

So You say...But why do a bunch of Danes play Old-Time?
As part of the musical evolution of the first half of 1900's, american
roots music gave birth to types of rhytmic music that would be played all
over the world. Rock and Roll, Jazz, RnB, Pop etc. have lost their roles
as types of music belonging to a specific nation, and are played
everywhere. And since these forms of music are direct decendants of
american folkmusic, it is only natural that interrest in this folkmusic
is spread around the world.
